Overview

 

With general direction by the Operations Manager, Area Safety Manager and Western Region Director of Safety and Training, supervise all division safety and training functions, provide classroom and BTW training as needed and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

 

Experience:

A work history demonstrating ability as a self-starter with good customer relationship skills, operational knowledge and safety leadership.

 

Pre-Employment Requirements:

  • Must subject to a pre-employment drug testing and background check
  • Possess valid CDL Class B with proper endorsements.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Respond to and collect information at accident scenes. Participate in investigation of vehicle accidents and occupational injuries. Make recommendations regarding cause, fault and retraining.
  • Observe, evaluate and document driving behaviors from a distance, safety spot checks at school loading zones, random reviewing of bus camera footage and GPS reports for safety violations and attend meetings with drivers and school staff as needed.
  • Ensures employees are properly trained on company specific and OSHA safety requirements.
  • Involved in maintaining and communicating safety-related policies and procedures, as well as ensuring that they are followed.
  • Perform local safety inspections including maintenance facilities, offices and company vehicles.
  • Observe working conditions, equipment and employee behaviors to identify safety problems and take corrective action.
  • Ensure that their divisions are in compliance with all safety-related regulatory requirements, including state school bus standards, OSHA standards, Department of Transportation regulations and Environmental Protection Agency requirements.
  • Process PANs (Personal Action Notice) for all LOA’s and other payroll changes and personnel matters.
  • Monitor and track all employees on LOA status and their benefits.
  • Provide information for audits such as Worker’s Compensation, 401(k), etc.
  • Assist employees and outside agencies in requests for personnel/payroll records.
  • Coordinate HR and administrative functions for the locations, including processing all new hires.
  • Provide classroom instruction and testing to original and renewing drivers.
  • Provide and supervise behind-the-wheel training, monitor trainees’ performance.
  • Recruit new drivers and monitors
  • Maintain an adequate pool of qualified and compliant drivers.
  • Participate in new employee interviews and make recommendations for employment.
  • Perform annual check-ride evaluations for all drivers and provide retraining as needed.
  • Provide re-training as necessary, (in particular post-accident and complaints).
  • Participate in and conduct monthly safety training meetings.
  • Maintain employees and trainee’s records.
  • Maintain accurate training files and records as required by the State law and Company policy.
  • Ensure annual bus evacuation instruction and field trip instruction is provided per the State law and contract.
  • Ensure required documents are completed accurately, in particular vehicle inspection forms and drivers’ logs.
  • Provide weekly training reports to the Director of Safety and Training.
  • Supervise a staff of Delegated behind-the-wheel trainers, Training Coordinators, and provide guidance and direction to all relating to State laws and safety procedures.
  • Assist operations staff and other related duties.

 

Qualifications

 

  • High school graduation or the equivalent and
  • At least three years of bus driving experience with a safe driving record.
  • Successful completion of the Colorado and STA Driver Trainer Certification Program.
  • Working knowledge of State traffic codes.
  • School bus operational policies and standard safety practices.
  • Basic knowledge of school transportation operating procedures.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records.
  • Special Education Drivers certification for school buses and current DOT medical.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once.
  • Ability to work autonomously and prioritize workload.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Excel, Word PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to interface with all varying internal and external management levels.

Physical Requirements:

 

  • Must be able to work shifts or flexible work schedules as needed.
  • The employee is greatly subjected to long periods spent sitting, typing, or looking at a computer screen. In addition, job requirements may require exposure to the elements during facility inspections and field monitoring.       Moderate physical dexterity is required.
