Overview

The Area Director is responsible for safety and training programs for all the locations within the assigned area. The Area Director will assist with program and policy development/implementation, in addition to working on daily tactical and operational issues. This is a salary, exempt position, which reports to Regional Director of Safety. The area of reponsibility is Northern California, Colorado, and Idaho.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and promote an accident and injury free safety culture within all operations.
  • Provide guidance, leadership, counseling, mentoring and evaluation of all safety and training personnel.
  • Develop and implement cost effective and efficient safety and training related programs for the Western Region
  • Oversee and assist in recruitment, selection, training and hiring of all vehicle operators and monitors.
  • Ensure all managers, supervisors and training personnel have received training on company Safety Policies and Procedures and related Federal and State regulations.
  • Plan and participate in driver development programs including in-service training, driving evaluations and road observations.
  • Participate in the investigation of vehicle accidents and occupational injuries and make recommendations regarding cause, preventability and retraining.
  • Complete Safety Reviews and compliance inspections with follow up to ensure full compliance and accuracy of all driver credentialing and safety programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all company, state and federal safety related regulations.
  • Keep records and submit reports as required.
  • Assist in all matters related to safety and training.

 

Qualifications

 

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the transportation industry
  • Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, OSHA and other applicable health and safety standards
  • Outstanding communication skills and highly motivated.
  • Ability to travel to assigned facilities within a designated Area.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Management; Environmental Health & Safety, Data Analytics or any other related field
  • A professional safety certification through a nationally recognized safety organization, such as the National Safety Council.
  • Experience in the School Bus Industry

 

Working Conditions:

 

Incumbent must be available to work in excess of 40 hours per week to meet business needs. This position requires travel to other STA facilities as directed by management and business needs. Overnight travel to the states and areas of responsibility are required. 30-40% travel is not unusual.

 

Interpersonal Contacts:

The Area Director of Safety/Training has significant, daily contact with all levels of Company personnel and, as necessary, with outside entities such as attorneys, business partners and the public. Contacts are generally for the purpose of dispensing information, providing technical advice, policy interpretation or for program coordination. These contacts will require considerable judgment, diplomacy and discretion and the ability to communicate clearly. The Area Director of Safety/Training deals regularly with sensitive and/or confidential information and, therefore, must exercise extreme care in maintaining confidentiality and privacy.
